The mining of rich agricultural lands in Colombia has led to the destruction of communities, disruption of traditional ways of life and the empowerment of paramilitaries protecting the interests of powerful local elites and international companies.  Human rights defenders like Teófilo Acuña, leader of the agro-mining federation FEDEAGROMISBOL, are at the forefront of protecting land and community rights, and face serious threat as a result.

Jhonel Cárdenas, social leader in Curumaní (Cesar), was victim of an assassination attempt

Jhonel Cárdenas Castrillo is a communitarian leader, and the local president of the political party Polo Democrático Alternativo (Democratic Alternative Pole). He suffered an attempt of assassination last Friday, September 7th, at 6:30 pm. He  was home when an armed individual fired at him.  Fortunately Mr. Cárdenas wasn’t hit and was able to disarm the shooter who ran out of Mr.Cardenas’s house and escaped on a motorcycle which was driven by his accomplice.   The police in the municipality of Curumani, hometown of Mr. Cárdenas, are now aware of this episode.

Violence Against Women Continues in the Colombian Massif

The Committee for the Integration of the Colombian Massif (CIMA) denounces -- before regional, national and international human rights organizations -- the assassination of Luz Eneida Gómez. Ms. Gómez was 35 years old and the wife of community leader Oscar Díaz. Mr. Díaz is a member of the CIMA, as well as the Committee of Coffee Producers of the La Sierra Municipality, Cauca Department (province).

754 Prisoners Initiate Hunger Strike in Girón Santander

Prisoners incarcerated in the “Palo Gordo” prison of Girón Santander, have announced that more than 754 prisoners—including social and political prisoners—have initiated an indefinite hunger strike; meanwhile, other prisoners in the institution will continue to perform non-violent acts of civil disobedience such as refusing to wear uniforms or rejecting routine counts by prison guards. These measures are being taken to demand guarantees for the respect of the fundamental human rights of inmates.

Depuis bientôt 10 ans des communautés du Bajo Atrato, plus particulièrement du Curvarado et du Jiguamiando, se sont mobilisées et se sont organisées dans un processus de résistance pour la défense de leur territoire, territoire duquel elles ont été déplacées lors des vagues de violence de 1996-97. Depuis 2010, le gouvernement a mis sur pied dans la région un processus de dévolution des terres qu’il prétend être emblématique pour la nation. Le prétendu exemple servirait à démontrer la bonne foi gouvernementale en ce qui a trait à la restitution territoriale.

Canadian Gran Colombia Gold Responsible for New Abuses Against Campesinos in the Municipality of Arboleda, Department of Nariño.

The Mazamorras Gold mining project, owned by Canadian multinational Gran Colombia Gold, and directed by ex-Colombian Foreign Affairs Minister María Consuelo Araujo, is located between the municipalities of Arboleda and San Lorenzo, in the Department of Nariño, Colombia. The company is currently moving ahead with mining exploration activities, which has created an environment of chaos and confrontation in and around local communities.
