The Oil Industry Workers Union (USO) condemns the detention of its companions today.

CAMPO ELIAS ORTIZ, HECTOR SANCHEZ and JOSE DILIO NARANJO, workers and union leaders of the Department of Meta, were deprived of their freedom because of the worker protests in 2011 and 2012 en the municipal of Puerto Gaitán and who worked in businesses against multinational PACIFIC RUBIALES.

On November 2, 2013, in the city of Villavicencio, Brother DARIO CARDENAS, Vice President of USO (META), was arrested under a warrant from the First Criminal Court of Villavicencio, in which he is accused of “obstruction of public roadways, arson, and aggravated damage to property.”

754 Prisoners Initiate Hunger Strike in Girón Santander

Prisoners incarcerated in the “Palo Gordo” prison of Girón Santander, have announced that more than 754 prisoners—including social and political prisoners—have initiated an indefinite hunger strike; meanwhile, other prisoners in the institution will continue to perform non-violent acts of civil disobedience such as refusing to wear uniforms or rejecting routine counts by prison guards. These measures are being taken to demand guarantees for the respect of the fundamental human rights of inmates.

The media announced a new corruption scandal in the “Picota” National Prison last week, this time due to the Nule businessmen (brothers Miguel, Manuel and Guido), being sentenced for the so-called "Contracting Carousel in Bogota" to paltry sentences of 7 years (and in the case of their business partner Mauricio Galofre, to only 6 years 8 months), for the crime of embezzlement by irregular management and for the appropriation of about 70 billion Colombian pesos as an advance on three contracts given by the IDU (Urban Development Institute).
